Skovhuset Kunst & Natur sætter med efterårets udstilling Nu Falmer Skoven fokus på naturen som et sted, der kan være fascinerende men også uhyggeligt og skræmmende på samme tid. Syv kunstnere med international spændvidde viser i udstillingen forskellige perspektiver på naturens mere mørke sider.

Naturen forbindes ofte med forestillingen om noget billedskønt, meditativt og livsbekræftende, men kan også være forbundet med noget mørkt og frygtindgydende. Oplevelsen af naturen som truende er højaktuel med den usikkerhed og ængstelse, som de konkrete klimapåvirkede vejrforhold og coronavirussens spredning over hele verden har ført med sig. Men frygten kan også være betinget af en indre angst og usikkerhed, af mentale tilstande som vi overfører til naturen og til forestillingen om naturen som noget uhyggeligt.

I Nu Falmer Skoven deltager syv kunstnere med fotografier, videoværker, skulpturer og installationer, som på tankevækkende vis griber ind i vores frygt for det lunefulde og uvisse i naturen. Forbindelsen mellem vores indre, psykiske landskaber og ydre, fysiske forhold og økosystemer er emner Jakob Kudsk Steensen og Joachim Koester tager fat i. På hver sin måde kobler de menneskets ubevidste lag sammen med bl.a. fobien for vand eller med kropslige ur-bevægelser i samklang med naturen. Astrid Kruse Jensen kredser om den sårbarhed, som er forbundet med frygten for det forgængelige, mens Daniel Gustav Kramer afsøger naturens nærmest mytiske dybder og vores sammensatte følelse af tiltrækning og uro. Sammenkædningen af vores skjulte og ubevidste impulser med naturen går igen i værker af Maiken Bent og Astrid Svangren, som med henholdsvis en markeret slagkraft og en mere subtil erindringsverden skildrer de psykologiske rum, som aftegner sig i naturen. Hos Jennifer Steinkamp er skoven derimod stukket af og indgår nu som en egen planet i kredsløb omkring Jorden, med grene som let truende fangarme, der griber ud mod os.

Udstillingens titel er naturligvis hentet fra N.F.S Grundtvigs kendt salme ”Nu falmer skoven trindt om land” fra 1844, der beskriver efteråret og hvordan naturen her taber sin kraft for igen at vende spirende tilbage til foråret. I udstillingen er titlen brugt som en henvisning til særligt forfaldet, mørket og angsten, men også de sammensatte følelser af angst og håb, frygt og ansvar, mange mennesker oplever i dag.

Lounge

Skovhuset har som del af sine udstillinger etableret en lounge, hvor besøgende kan fordybe sig i den aktuelle udstilling samt i menneskets, kunstens og naturens indbyrdes forbundne verden gennem litteratur foreslået af de medvirkende kunstnere. De fremlagte bøger er udvalgt på baggrund af de udstillende kunstneres forslag og relaterer til de kunstneriske processer og inspirationer bag værkerne i de skiftende udstillinger. Loungen fungerer således både som en fordybelseszone for den aktuelle udstilling og som et arkiv for tidligere udstillinger. Bøgerne tilbyder anderledes indgange til værkerne og knytter sig på forskellige måder til temaer i udstillingerne. I forbindelse med Nu Falmer Skoven giver bøgerne alternative perspektiver på naturen som både dragende, gådefuld og truende.

På hylderne finder man udgivelser publiceret af Laboratoriet for Æstetik og Økologi, som er et forlag og en eksperimenterende platform for forskellige typer projekter. Med udgangspunkt i økoæstetiske, feministiske praksisser arbejder de med spørgsmål om personlig og planetarisk udmattelse og sårbarhed og kunstens helende potentialer på en såret klode. Loungen byder til de skiftende udstillinger endvidere på en auditiv komposition, hvor en inviteret lydkunstners værk griber ind i den aktuelle udstillings tematik og tydeliggør, hvordan det fordybende ved at lytte skærper vores forbindelse til jorden. Til Nu Falmer Skoven udstilles lydværket Obake (2010) af Jacob Kirkegaard.

With this autumn's exhibition, Nu Falmer Skoven (The Dark, Dangerous Depths of Nature), Skovhuset Kunst & Natur focuses on nature as a place that can be fascinating but also scary and frightening at the same time. In the exhibition, seven internationally renowned artists present different perspectives on the darker sides of nature.

Nature is often associated with the idea of something beautiful, meditative and life-affirming, but it can also be associated with something dark and terrifying. The perception of nature as threatening is highly topical with the uncertainty and anxiety that the specific climate-affected weather conditions and the spread of the coronavirus across the world have brought. But fear can also be conditioned by inner anxiety and uncertainty, by mental states that we transfer to nature and to the idea of nature as something scary.

In Nu Falmer Skoven, seven artists participate with photographs, video works, sculptures and installations that thought-provokingly address our fear of the capriciousness and uncertainty of nature. The connection between our inner, psychological landscapes and outer, physical conditions and ecosystems are topics that Jakob Kudsk Steensen and Joachim Koester address. In their own way, they connect the unconscious layers of the human mind with, for example, the phobia of water or with bodily clock movements in harmony with nature. Astrid Kruse Jensen focuses on the vulnerability associated with the fear of impermanence, while Daniel Gustav Kramer explores the almost mythical depths of nature and our complex feelings of attraction and unease. The linking of our hidden and unconscious impulses with nature is echoed in works by Maiken Bent and Astrid Svangren, who depict the psychological spaces that emerge in nature with a pronounced impact and a more subtle sense of memory respectively. In Jennifer Steinkamp's work, on the other hand, the forest has escaped and is now a planet of its own in orbit around the Earth, with branches as slightly threatening tentacles reaching out towards us.

The title of the exhibition is taken from the Danish writer and theologist N.F.S Grundtvig's famous hymn ‘Nu falmer skoven trindt om land’ from 1844, which describes autumn and how nature loses its power, only to regain it in spring. In the exhibition, the title is used as a reference to decay, darkness and fear in particular, but also the complex feelings of anxiety and hope, fear and responsibility that many people experience today.

LOUNGE

As part of its exhibitions, Skovhuset has established a lounge where visitors can immerse themselves in the current exhibition and the interconnected world of man, art and nature through literature suggested by the participating artists. The books on display are selected based on the exhibiting artists' suggestions and relate to the artistic processes and inspirations behind the works in the changing exhibitions. The lounge thus functions both as an immersion zone for the current exhibition and as an archive of previous exhibitions. The books offer different approaches to the works and relate in different ways to the themes of the exhibitions. In connection with Now the Forest Fades, the books offer alternative perspectives on nature as alluring, mysterious and threatening.

On the shelves you will find publications published by the Laboratory for Aesthetics and Ecology, a publishing house and experimental platform for different types of projects. Based on eco-aesthetic, feminist practices, they work with questions of personal and planetary exhaustion and vulnerability and the healing potential of art on a wounded planet. During the changing exhibitions, the lounge also offers an auditory composition, where an invited sound artist's work engages with the theme of the current exhibition and illustrates how the immersive nature of listening sharpens our connection to the earth. The sound work Obake (2010) by Jacob Kirkegaard will be exhibited during Nu Falmer Skoven.
